In the depth of the endarkenment going off the reservation can be career ending, so fear seems the most likely root of this behavior.

In my experience many people are capable of critical thinking but only a small percentage of these will speak, write or act publicly if it could jeopardize their income.

Scientific advance is destructive, and major advance very so.
